The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) is offering the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship programme to support postgraduate students from developing and middle-income Commonwealth countries to study in the region.

Commonwealth Scholarships relayed that this enables eligible students who cannot afford UK study to pursue Master’s degrees that address key development needs in their home countries. Through a joint funding model between the CSC and UK universities, the programme looks to build skilled professionals who can contribute to national growth and international cooperation.

The Shared Scholarship is one of three Master’s programmes managed by the CSC, which administers the UK government’s international scholarship scheme guided by global development objectives.

Operating under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), the Commission supports students with academic potential and leadership capability to acquire knowledge and experience that benefit their countries after graduation.

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship programme originated to strengthen the development capacity of Commonwealth countries. The body stated ‘its goal is to provide training opportunities for professionals and academics who would otherwise lack the resources to study in the UK’.

The CSC notes that the programme “contributes to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals and academics who would not otherwise have been able to study in the UK.”

Scholars are expected to apply their knowledge and leadership skills to social, economic, and institutional development in their home countries after completing their studies. The programme also promotes collaboration between the UK and Commonwealth nations through education and research.

Eligible Applicants and Duration

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is open to applicants from a range of eligible Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria, as part of efforts to promote educational access and development across member nations.

Eligible applicants must not have studied for a year or more in a high-income country and must demonstrate that they would be unable to afford studying in the UK without financial assistance.

Other eligible nations include Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Uganda, among others. The full list also features countries across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific such as Malaysia, Jamaica, Fiji, and Zambia.

The award typically funds one year of full-time Master’s study at a participating UK university. Scholars are selected for courses that demonstrate clear relevance to development priorities such as public health, governance, climate resilience, and sustainable growth.

Application and Selection Process

Applications are made through UK universities that participate in the programme. Each university submits bids for scholarships linked to postgraduate courses that have a measurable development impact. Institutions that are awarded scholarships must agree to contribute to the living cost component, while the CSC covers tuition fees and other core costs.

Universities conduct the initial selection process based on academic merit, eligibility, and potential development contribution. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission reviews and approves the final list of candidates.

This joint selection approach ensures that both universities and the CSC align their efforts toward promoting equitable access to higher education and development-focused study.

How to Apply

Applications for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for the 2026/27 academic year will open on November 12th, 2025. The scholarships are for Master’s study in the UK starting in September or October 2026.
