Ecuador has ended visa-free airport transit for citizens of 45 countries, including Nigeria and 33 other African nations.
Travellers from these countries now need a Transit Visa to pass through Ecuadorian airports, even if they do not leave the international transit zone. The policy represents a significant change in Ecuador’s border and immigration control regulations.
As cited in Business Insider Africa’s report, the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility announced the new measure, which aims to strengthen international travel oversight through the country’s airports. The ministry cited increased concerns over irregular migration as the reason for introducing tighter controls.
Transit Visa Requirement Introduced
The visa exemption previously allowed travellers from the listed countries to transit through Ecuador without a visa, provided they remained in the airport’s international zone without clearing immigration or customs. This provision has now been revoked.
The new requirement now mandates that all travellers from the affected countries obtain a Transit Visa (Visa de Transeúnte) before travel, even if their stay in Ecuador is only for a few hours and confined to the airport.
In a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility statement, the government said the directive is “a necessary measure to improve transit regulation and respond to rising security concerns.”
African Countries Most Affected
Of the 45 nations impacted by this change, 34 are African countries. These include:
- Nigeria
- Ghana
- Egypt
- Sudan
- Ethiopia
- Eritrea
- Somalia
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Republic of Congo
- Cameroon
- Liberia
- Sierra Leone
- Guinea
- Guinea-Bissau
- The Gambia
- Senegal
- Togo
- Benin
- Mali
- Niger
- Burkina Faso
- Chad
- Central African Republic
- Angola
- Mozambique
- Zimbabwe
- Zambia
- Rwanda
- Burundi
- Uganda
- Algeria
- Morocco
- Tunisia
- South Sudan
The new policy will have the most impact on the African region. Travellers from these countries will now need to plan additional visa applications and possible delays in their transit schedules through Ecuador.
Impact on Travel Routes and Costs
Ecuador has served as a transit point for many travelers heading to North America and Europe, especially those departing from African and other Global South countries. The new visa requirement is expected to increase travel costs and disrupt existing flight plans.
Passengers transiting through Ecuador may need to seek alternative routes or apply for additional documentation in advance, which could lead to longer travel times and more complex itineraries.
Airlines may also need to adjust their policies and inform travellers from affected nations about the new requirements to avoid missed connections or denied boarding at points of departure.
Part of Broader Immigration Trend
This decision reflects a wider global pattern of countries adjusting immigration and border control laws in response to increased migration and related security concerns. African nationals have been particularly affected by similar visa restrictions in other regions.
By requiring transit visas for citizens from specific countries, Ecuador joins a growing list of nations implementing more stringent entry and transit policies. The Ecuadorian government has not indicated whether further changes to immigration rules are planned.
No timeline has been provided for a review or reversal of the policy.
