The Australian Department of Home Affairs will begin accepting more English language tests for visa applications starting August 7th, 2025, and will also change the score requirements for some existing tests.
These updates are meant to give applicants more test options. TravelBiz cites that from the set date, visa applicants can submit results from three new English tests. These include the CELPIP General, the LANGUAGECERT Academic, and the Michigan English Test (MET). All test results will be valid for three years from the test date.
The CELPIP General is a computer-based test from Canada assessing everyday English in work and social contexts. Test results are typically available within 4–5 business days.
The LANGUAGECERT Academic test evaluates English for academic and professional use, available in both paper and computer formats. Results are generally ready within three business days.
The MET test, popular in the U.S. and Latin America, assesses general English proficiency for work and study settings. It is offered online and at test centres.
Revised Score Requirements for Current English Tests
The Department of Home Affairs is also adjusting minimum score requirements for several existing English tests to ensure consistency. These tests include the PTE Academic, C1 Advanced, Occupational English Test (OET), and TOEFL iBT.
The C1 Advanced test will no longer be accepted for visas requiring only Vocational English. Applicants under such visa subclasses must choose other tests.
Minimum Scores Needed for Competent English Level
Applicants must meet minimum scores in all four components—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—to qualify for Competent English. The minimum score thresholds for each test are:
- IELTS: 6.0 in all sections
- PTE Academic: Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54
- C1 Advanced: Listening and Reading 163, Writing 170, Speaking 179 (not accepted for Vocational English)
- TOEFL iBT: Listening and Reading 16, Writing and Speaking 19
- OET: Listening and Writing 290, Reading 310, Speaking 330
- CELPIP General: 7 in all four sections
- LANGUAGECERT Academic: Listening 57, Reading 60, Writing 64, Speaking 70
- MET: Listening 56, Reading 55, Writing 57, Speaking 48
Scores below the minimum in any component may affect visa eligibility.
Implications for Visa Applicants
These updates, as stated, offer applicants greater flexibility in selecting an English test based on their strengths, format preferences, and availability. Tests can be computer-based, paper-based, or taken at home, where applicable.
Applicants should ensure their test results are less than three years old when submitting visa applications and meet all updated score requirements.
The Department of Home Affairs notes that applicants choose their tests carefully and prepare to meet the new standards.
Visa applicants are advised to review these changes thoroughly to avoid complications during the application process.
