The initiative, known as “Project Homecoming,” allows eligible individuals to leave the United States voluntarily, avoiding detention and receiving a financial stipend and free travel. Sixty-four undocumented migrants have voluntarily returned to their home countries aboard a US government-funded flight, as part of a new program launched by the Department of Homeland Security.
The program is part of the immigration enforcement strategy under President Donald Trump. The administration says the approach offers a less confrontational method of reducing the undocumented population in the country.
First Government Flight Returns Migrants to Honduras and Colombia
BBC News cites that the first chartered flight under Project Homecoming departed from Texas and carried 64 migrants to Honduras and Colombia. Homeland Security confirmed that 38 individuals returned to Honduras while 26 went to Colombia. The agency described the operation as a “voluntary charter flight” and stated that it was not conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
This offers undocumented migrants the option to apply through the CBP (Customs and Border Protection) Home app. Those who choose to participate receive a $1,000 stipend and do not face detention, fines, or other legal consequences for their undocumented status.
Homeland Security Urges Voluntary Departure
U.S. officials have promoted Project Homecoming as a cooperative alternative to forced deportation. In a public statement, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem encouraged eligible individuals to participate.
“If you are here illegally, use the CBP Home App to take control of your departure and receive financial support to return home,” Noem said.
“If you don’t, you will be subjected to fines, arrest, deportation and will never be allowed to return.”
Since the program’s announcement in March, reports indicate that some undocumented migrants have already been returned home on commercial flights using the app-based system. The charter flight marked a further step in formalising the initiative.
Project Homecoming represents a new tool in the Trump administration’s immigration policy. While officials frame it as a voluntary process that avoids confrontation, the program exists alongside more aggressive deportation efforts that continue to face legal scrutiny.
