China’s Ming Yang Smart Energy, has said it plans to invest £1.5 billion to build the UK’s first fully integrated offshore wind turbine factory in Scotland. This move promises clean energy, new jobs, and lower power bills for households.
The project is expected to generate 1,500 initial jobs, with potential for 1,500 more as the facility expands. It will reuse existing oil and gas infrastructure, helping workers transition into renewables.
Built in three phases, the facility will start with nacelle and blade manufacturing by 2028, then move to floating wind tech, and finally produce control systems and electronics. The “Ocean X” 16.6 MW turbine could cut turbine costs by up to 30 %.
Officials emphasise that this could turn Scotland into a strategic hub for offshore wind in Europe. If approved, the project will anchor UK manufacturing, attract investment, and support the country’s net-zero and energy security aims.
