Thousands of skilled workers across the United Kingdom have contributed to delivering the British Army’s newest armoured fighting vehicle, AJAX.

The vehicle, described by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) as the world’s most advanced medium-weight armoured platform, has reached Initial Operating Capability (IOC), allowing a squadron to be deployed on operations.

According to the UK’s Ministry of Defence, AJAX was developed through a partnership between the British Army, Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), and General Dynamics.

The six variants of the vehicle are made at General Dynamics’ factory in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, with parts and support from over 230 UK companies, providing more than 4,100 jobs across the country.

Rupert Pearce, National Armaments Director, said, “Ajax represents a transformational capability for UK defence, delivered by thousands of skilled workers across Britain. It strengthens the Armed Forces while supporting economic growth through the UK’s defence industrial base.”

This, as stated, falls in line with the government’s Plan for Change and contributes to the UK’s economic growth. It follows the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening national security and industrial capability.

Captain John Hutton from the Household Cavalry Regiment, which tested the vehicle, said, “Driving AJAX is a step change from the previous generation of armoured vehicles. The control mechanism and the situational awareness it provides are unlike anything I have driven before.”

Economic and Export Opportunities

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, said the programme highlights defence as a key driver of economic activity.

“Defence is an engine for growth. AJAX is contributing not only to the economy in South Wales but also across the UK in the supply chain. We’re exploring the potential to export AJAX,” he said.

Secretary of State for Wales Jo Stevens said, “Defence investment from the UK Government directly supports thousands of jobs across every part of Wales. The delivery of Ajax vehicles for the Army, made in Merthyr, strengthens the defence industry’s role in the Welsh economy.”

The MOD confirmed that the AJAX programme also offers export potential, with discussions already underway with several potential international customers. This follows recent UK defence export deals worth up to £18 billion, including contracts for Type 26 frigates and Typhoon fighter jets.

The programme forms part of a £41 billion investment in Army equipment and support over the next decade, directed at improving precision, connectivity, and combat capability.
