Veteran journalist Tayo Fagbule has stepped down as Editor of BusinessDay to take up a new role as West Africa Bureau Chief at CNBC, signalling a strategic push by the global broadcaster to deepen its coverage across the region’s growing markets.
Fagbule, a respected voice in business journalism, officially exited BusinessDay this month after leading the newsroom through a period of digital transformation and editorial expansion. He will now oversee CNBC’s operations across multiple West African countries, a region that accounts for a significant portion of Africa’s GDP and continues to attract rising investor interest.
A seasoned voice in African business reporting
Fagbule’s journalism career spans over two decades, bridging media, academia, and economic policy. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Lagos and an MBA from the Lagos Business School, where he later served as MBA Director, combining teaching, research, and real-world business analysis.
Before joining BusinessDay, he worked as a correspondent for The Africa Report and Africa Confidential, where he covered trade, markets, and governance issues across Nigeria and West Africa. His work has been recognised for its analytical depth and clarity on complex economic topics.
Transforming BusinessDay’s digital future
Under his leadership, BusinessDay consolidated its position as Nigeria’s most authoritative business publication, strengthening its digital platforms and expanding its coverage of markets, finance, and regional economies.
Industry peers credit Fagbule for steering the newsroom through a fast-changing media environment. “He brought academic rigour and digital vision to business journalism,” said a senior BusinessDay reporter. “His legacy is a newsroom that is more agile, data-driven, and globally relevant.”
CNBC expands its African footprint
Fagbule’s move to CNBC comes as the network works harder to increase its presence across Africa. This expansion follows rising investor interest in the continent, which has a combined $2.8 trillion economy and growing financial hubs like Lagos, Accra, and Abidjan.
In his new role, Fagbule will lead CNBC’s West African bureau, coordinating cross-border reporting, regional market coverage, and in-depth features on trade, infrastructure, and innovation.
