Laos has started using a new online immigration system at four international border points. Foreign visitors and stateless people must now fill out the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) online before arriving in or leaving the country.
Announced by the Department of Immigration on September 2nd, 2025, all foreign passport holders and stateless individuals must register through the LDIF system by visiting the country’s immigration official website.
The body stated that Lao citizens are not required to fill out the form for either arrival or departure.
Digital Process Replaces Paper Cards
The LDIF replaces the traditional arrival and departure cards with an online form. After completing the registration, travellers receive a QR code, which must be presented at immigration checkpoints. The code is valid for three days from the time of submission.
Travellers are advised to complete the LDIF form at least three days before their travel. Upon completion, they will receive a QR code via email or on-screen, which can be saved digitally or printed out for presentation at the border.
To avoid delays or issues at the border, the Department recommends:
- Using only the official immigration website to submit the form
- Ensuring all information, including passport validity and travel dates, is correct before submission
- Timing the submission carefully, as the QR code is valid for 72 hours only
System Expansion Expected by 2026
Authorities have confirmed that the LDIF system will gradually extend to cover all international land borders and airports. The goal is to have nationwide coverage by 2026, streamlining the immigration process and reducing paper usage.
For guidance on how to submit the form, travellers can refer to the official video tutorial published by the Department of Immigration.
Travellers are encouraged to complete the process in advance and carry the required QR code when entering or exiting Laos.
