Enugu Tariff Cut Triggers Blackout as EEDC Warns of ₦1bn Loss

A recent tariff reduction has led to power outages in parts of Enugu State after the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) halved its energy supply to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), the latter said on Sunday.

MEDL said it has received only 50% of its usual electricity allocation over the past four days following a new tariff order from the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), which cut the Band A rate from ₦209.50 to ₦160.40 per kilowatt-hour.

EEDC, which supplies electricity to MEDL, warned that the revised tariff would lead to monthly losses of more than ₦1 billion, making it difficult to meet its financial obligations in the electricity market.

“To mitigate these losses, EEDC made the difficult decision to reduce the volume of energy supplied to MEDL,” the company said in a statement.

MEDL said it does not receive electricity directly from the national grid but relies solely on EEDC, which holds a vesting contract with the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).

The company apologised for the delayed communication and said discussions with stakeholders at both state and federal levels were ongoing to resolve the issue.

It expressed hope that full supply would be restored within 48 hours or shortly thereafter.
