Travellers planning a visit to France must now follow a new mandatory procedure for booking visa appointments. The updated process, already in effect, applies to all international applicants seeking both short-stay Schengen visas and long-stay national visas for France.
The French visa authorities have introduced a revised, fully online system that includes multiple verification steps aimed at standardising appointment bookings and preventing misuse of the system. Failure to follow these steps may result in delays or cancellation of visa applications.
Step-by-Step System Introduced for Visa Applicants
Under the updated procedure, visa applicants must follow a five-step process beginning with the Visa Wizard, TravelBiz informs. This official online tool helps determine whether a visa is needed and, if so, what type of visa is required based on the applicant’s travel purpose and situation. It also lists the required documents and applicable fees.
Travellers who have recently visited the Schengen Area are advised to use the Visa Calculator, available on the same platform, to assess the number of authorised stay days they have left.
Only those confirmed as eligible by the Visa Wizard can proceed to book an appointment. This is designed to reduce invalid or unnecessary bookings.
Appointment Request Now Goes Through a New Online Portal
Once eligibility is confirmed, applicants must register and submit a visa appointment request through the French government’s “Demarches Simplifiées” platform. A questionnaire asks for essential travel details, including departure date, reason for travel, and stay duration.
Upon acceptance, the applicant receives an email with an appointment date. It is mandatory to reply to this email to confirm availability. Unconfirmed appointments will be automatically cancelled.
Before the appointment, applicants must also complete the visa application procedure on the France-Visas website and bring a printed copy, along with all required documents, to the appointment.
What to Expect During the Visa Appointment
Visa appointments take place at a visa centre or consulate. At the appointment, staff verify documents, collect biometric data (fingerprints and a photograph), and process the visa fee. The applicant’s passport and required documents will be kept and forwarded to the consulate for review.
A government official noted, “If your fingerprints have been collected within the last 59 months during a previous visa application, you may not need to appear in person again.”
All applicants must ensure that the identity presented at the appointment matches the one used during the online booking. Mismatched information will lead to a denial of processing.
Processing Times and Application Tracking
Standard processing time for French visa applications is approximately 15 calendar days. However, in complex cases, processing may take up to 45 days. Applicants are advised to plan their travel timelines accordingly.
After submission, the visa centre monitors the application and notifies the applicant once the passport is ready for collection. Passports must be collected from the same centre where the application was originally submitted.
Key Points for Travellers
Authorities recommend several steps to ensure a smoother visa process:
- Use official tools to verify visa requirements and eligibility
- Respond promptly to confirmation emails
- Bring all required documents to the appointment
- Monitor communication from the visa centre
The new appointment process seeks to simplify visa applications and ensure that only eligible applicants proceed with scheduling. All travellers to France in 2025 are encouraged to review the latest guidelines thoroughly before starting their visa application.
