To qualify, applicants must receive a full-time, non-seasonal job offer from a designated employer located within Sault Ste. Marie. List of In-Demand Occupations
The 25 priority Skilled Foreign Workers under the RCIP are grouped into five sectors. In healthcare, eligible roles include:
- Pharmacy technicians (NOC 32124),
- Registered nurses (NOC 31301)
- Licensed practical nurses (NOC 32101), and
- Personal support workers (NOC 33102)
Nurses may also qualify for personal support or home support roles.
In education and social services, the list includes:
- Therapists (NOC 41301)
- Community service workers (NOC 42201), and
- Early childhood educators (NOC 42202)
The sales and services category includes:
- Food service supervisors (NOC 62020)
- Guest service supervisors (NOC 62022), and
- Security guard supervisors (NOC 62029)
All with annual caps on the number of available positions.
Trades and transport occupations include:
- Engineers (mechanical, electrical), technicians, and transit operators. Manufacturing includes production workers (NOC 94107)
Eligibility and Application Requirements
Candidates must have at least one year (1,560 hours) of relevant work experience in the last three years. Language requirements range from Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 4 to 6, depending on the job’s classification under the Training, Education, Experience and Responsibilities (TEER) system.
Education requirements include a Canadian high school diploma or a recognised foreign credential assessment. For regulated professions, additional licensing assessments are required.
Applicants also need a community recommendation. Employers submit these applications to the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, which reviews the candidate’s ties to the community, the job offer, and the match to local needs.
Application Timeline and Employer Role
PR applications can only be submitted during specific intake periods. For 2025, these periods run every month from April 27th to November 22nd. Designated employers must be based in Sault Ste. Marie has been operational for at least two years and is in good standing with Ontario’s labour laws.
Employers must offer positions that are permanent, full-time, and within the wage range defined for the occupation in Ontario. No payments or fees can be required from candidates in exchange for job offers.
Support for International Students
International students recently graduated from a recognised public post-secondary institution in Sault Ste. Marie may be exempt from the work experience requirement.
The exemption applies to those who completed full-time studies in eligible programs and maintained residence in the city during their education.
